1.    Respiratory Health Pilot Project in West & South Durban

Collaboration on this project was with CHEEA & eThekwini Municipality: City Health - Pollution Control and Risk Management Department (PCRM).

Project Objective:

Preparation And Undertaking Of An Education Programme To Promote Understanding And Importance Of Environment And Health Linkages With A Particular Focus On Respiratory Health - Asthma. 

The project

(A)  To raise awareness of targeted communities in the eThekwini Municipality to air pollution and possible health effects and thereby promotion of community level prevention measures which help to reduce significant impacts on, or risks to, human health.

(B)  Facilitates the development and adoption of the environmental health education curriculum guide for teachers and institutional learning materials for relevant stakeholders.   The project aims at strengthening CHEEA, a Women’s Health and Environmental Education Awareness organisation in south Durban in South Africa in their work to promote an understanding and importance of environmental health linkages, focusing on respiratory health in schools, in particular Asthma. 

Rolling Out of the Project:

•          This project was aimed at learners, educators and their caregivers in the West & South Sub Districts of the eThekwini Municipality region, where nearly all of them live in disadvantaged areas. 6 schools were elected.

     •     Schools in the West of eThekwini Municipality:

             •     Motala Heights Primary School in Motala Heights – west Durban

             •       Delani Primary School in Thornwood – west Durban

             •       Zakhele Primary School in Claremont – west Durban

     •     Schools in the South of the eThekwini Municipality:

            •       Nizam Road Primary School in Merebank – south Durban

            •      Wentworth Primary School in Wentworth – south Durban

            •      Mgada Primary School in eNgonyameni area (Umbumbulu)
